Breakfast in Sicily

At the Cafe and Pastry Shop Delli in Fiumefreddo, a tiny beach town at the foot of Etna, I had the best brioche and coffee with granita and whipped cream of my trip…cross between iced coffee and hot coffee in your cup and a cross between doughnut and croissant on your plate…and Chantilly (whipped cream) on top.

A friend in Palermo told me that the tradition of granita (think artisanal slurpee) comes from the Arabs in Palermo who used to bring ice down from Etna to serve on hot days with orange and lemon juice poured over it.
